Etsy Tip 1: Use current trending topics and write these into your tags and titles
Go to the Etsy search bar, click it and it will give a drop-down menu called ‘popular right now’. These are titles and keywords that are trending right now with increased audience traffic. Look at these here:
Look through this list and see if any are relevant to the items that you sell. Of course, don’t just put something that’s irrelevant as this will harm your Etsy store instead of help.
Instead, look for tags such as this ‘light blue’. Do you have any products that are blue that you could currently add this tag to? Do you sell pet toys or accessories? Use your judgement if this could come under pet supplies and add this keyword, for example.
These ‘popular right now’ lists can change so it’s always helpful to pop on and have a look at what keywords are hot right now. This is a great way of keeping your Etsy store fresh and updated.
Etsy Tip 2: Don't be afraid to change titles and tags with the time of year
Following on from tip #1, adapt to the time of year when you sell on Etsy. Well, you might be thinking how is this a unique tip at all, obviously I’m going to make products for Christmas or Valentines? That’s a great start by getting some of this seasonal traffic, but read on…
Look at your current products. Is it a general gift? Toy? Accessory? Clothing? Whatever it is, you may be able to add a seasonal tag and change these based on the season.
For example, you sell hair bands throughout the year. At valentines, why not as well as making valentine specific head bands add valentine’s day gift tags to all appropriate products. At Christmas, say Christmas gift. It is a sure-fire way of increasing your Etsy traffic throughout the year.
You’d be surprised at the number of Etsy sellers who set and forget about their titles and tags who do not adapt them!
Etsy Tip 3: BUILD AN EMAIL LIST
You’ve probably heard this one before. But it’s surprising how many people read this and then don’t do it! It seems like hard work, but once it’s up and running it’s absolutely fantastic and a must if you’re serious about your Etsy store! Many people who sell on Etsy struggle building an email list – let us know in the comments if you’d like some tips and tricks on this.
There are an absolute abundance of email list providers, including:
• Mailchimp
• Sendinblue (This is what I use!)
• ConvertKit
• GetResponse
• MailerLite
• Constant Contact
This is in no way an exhaustive list, but you get the idea! There are lots of providers to look into, each with different prices and packages, so be sure to use what’s right for you. If anyone is interested in further information breaking down the pros and cons of each provider, let us know in the comments.
Etsy Tip 4: Free shipping and putting on a sale
Lots of experienced Etsy veterans either just cheered or booed depending on their own personal success – there’s a lot of debate around this topic.
Some Etsy sellers swear by putting all items on for free shipping and seeing an immediate boost in sales. This is because they then qualify for their items to be seen under a free shipping category. ALSO, consumers are now so used to having free shipping it’s almost an expected standard.
However, many Etsy veterans claim the cost of shipping will just need to be added to your product. Many customers can recognise this and search elsewhere for a cheaper product which also has free shipping.
In my experience, someone will always manage to do it cheaper but you just have to have faith in the quality of your product. Additionally, depending on your Etsy shop, offering free shipping is not possible with the profit margins.
This debate also occurs when putting on sales. Your items qualify to be under an ‘on sale’ category which can increase traffic and encourage customers to purchase as they are getting a deal. The product will also have a % off to make it clear which is eye catching.
However, there can be negatives. Some users argue customers will see your products on sale consistently, therefore, only buy from you when you have a sale on.
Overall, when you sell on Etsy you could try free shipping or putting on a long-term sale to see if it works for you!
Final Selling on Etsy Tip: Don't be afraid to try new things!
Is it important to have a niche? Absolutely. However, why not experiment with new product types around your niche? If you’re bossing it at the moment and loving the products you’re making, you rock on. But, there’s always room to expand and try new things too in order to keep it fresh. Do not box yourself in trying to keep to certain products when you sell on Etsy.
For example, let’s say your niche is dolphin products… random. You currently make and sell dolphin prints. Have you thought about expanding that to making cards, paintings or other artforms? Customers who like dolphins may also love the sea – you could try making ocean acrylic pours, concrete figurines or even candles that smell of the sea. The possibilities are endless! Conclusion
I hope these small tips give you some food for thought. Even if you’ve tried them or it helps you to think of new ideas for yourself, that’s amazing and you’re heading in the right direction – go get those cha-chings!
