I could labour on about the importance of long-tail keywords, titles and tags, attributes, in-bound links, recent listings, meta descriptions and all that jazz. But, I STRONGLY advise you to look at these 23 detailed Etsy SEO tips.
Each tip on this article is unique from the other and they’re really detailed. If Etsy SEO has always been a problem for you, I really believe and hope this article WILL help you.
Tip 2: Photography

Pictures are what catches a buyer’s attention. You could have the best title, tags or SEO in the world, but it doesn’t matter if your photos aren’t good quality.
It is FAR LESS likely that someone makes a purchase from your store if the images are blurry, unattractive or unclear. With good images, you stand out when people are looking through the search results.
Always ensure your images are bright with natural light, high-quality and show different angles of the product. It is always a brilliant idea to post a variety of images of your listing, each showing a different perspective. Consider a photo of the item being used, one with a clear background (studio shot), one close up, or even a photo of a group of your products.
There should also be a photo clearly showing the size and dimensions, potentially your packaging or you in the process of making your product.

Is shipping going to cost more? Yes, no question. But, it’s always worth still shipping to other countries even if you have to up the shipping cost. You never know who may be willing to pay it!
This tip is especially important if you live OUTSIDE of the United States. A massive majority of buyers and sellers reside here – so if you’re not shipping to the USA, you’re missing BIG traffic. The United Kingdom also has a large percentage of buyers and sellers. Don’t worry though, of the selling on Etsy tips, this one isn’t always possible!

How to sell on Etsy successfully? Immerse yourself in the community! The Etsy community is one of the friendliest, inviting groups of people I’ve ever had the pleasure of being part of. The majority are super helpful and willing to support you or help in any way they can.
But, what exactly do I mean by being part of the community? It varies.
4a) Other Etsy Sellers
Reach out to other Etsy sellers you admire or sellers you think are nailing the Etsy game. Ask them for advice in a friendly way. Whether that’s potentially asking for a shoutout to support one another, asking for feedback on your store or listings, or asking for general advice. If you do this, always say what you like about their work, why you’re reaching out – be as genuine as possible!
4b) Etsy Forums (Can also provide tips on how to sell on Etsy successfully)
participate in Etsy forums to build relationships with other sellers. If you’re comfortable, many people in forums are asking for help and you could be there to help and direct them to useful content. They’ll appreciate this and may click through to your store. I’ve written about email lists before on my 5 most underused Etsy tips (click here). But I’m adding it in again to this post. You may think I’m lazy using the same point, but I REALLY want you to sell on Etsy successfully. Repetition of this point is key until every single Etsy seller actually starts one.
Etsy sellers read this a million times. They hear about starting an email list over and over, but for some reason many stores don’t start one.
An email list will become a list of dedicated customers specifically interested in your products. It is a direct route to people who LOVE your items. This means when you have a new product, you can promote it straight to them and hopefully get sales. This immediate boost in traffic ensures your product quickly moves up the search rankings too. Email lists make getting repeat buyers easy.
You may think it’s difficult building an email list for your Etsy store. This is where your own personal blog comes in handy! But there are so many other methods of building your Etsy store email list. Let me know in the comments if this is something you’d be interested in hearing about.
Tip 7: Coupons & Sales (This Is A Great Selling On Etsy Tip)
Setting up coupon campaigns is fun and effective. In your shop manager under marketing, click on sales and coupons.
A brilliant coupon campaign to try is the recently favourited. This allows you to send out a coupon to potential buyers offering them a small discount on a product they just favourited. If a buyer liked your listing enough to favourite but is unsure whether to purchase, receiving a small discount could tip them over the edge. This can definitely increase your chance of sales!
Another coupon campaign that is a game-changer is the abandoned shopping cart coupon. This campaign allows you to send a coupon to a potential buyer who has placed your item in their basket but didn’t quite reach checkout. Again, it’s just that extra push to encourage someone to make a purchase.

Okay… is your SEO optimised? Good. Ads and promoted listings can be a game-changer for Etsy sellers. Promoted listings work using cost per click (CPC), which means you’ll only be charged when a buyer actually clicks onto your product. If you’ve optimised your descriptions, photography and everything else, it significantly increases your chance of a sale.
Some sellers rave about promoted listings and others have tried it and don’t use them. See what you think as they can really help boost your traffic MASSIVELY!
Remember, don’t just put all your listings up for promotion. Select your best products, the ones that sell the most per visit, as this will maximise your chance at greater sales and profits. It will also limit the amount of money you spend advertising products that don’t sell as well. You don’t necessarily need ads to sell on Etsy successfully, but they can help!
Tip 9: Customisable Products Or Custom Orders
Custom products are a massive market! It becomes a listing that suddenly appeals to the masses as buyers get a say in exactly how they want the item to be.
I’ve always said customisable products come in two main formats. You can either offer customisation by changing the general listing colour, smell, shape… you name it. Or, you can customise it with specific buyer requests, such as adding their personal name or self-made design onto your product.
Both methods are fantastic and really allow the buyer to feel involved in the process and these really drive sales. Even if you think your products aren’t really customisable, if you could stretch to even providing 1 or 2, it would help. Especially as you can then use the keywords ‘custom’ and ‘personalised’ in your store.
Tip 10: Offer competitive shipping rates (If you can!)
Shipping costs are a VITAL component of whether an online shopper buys a product. Free shipping has become, to many buyers, an expectation and common standard.
Because of this, many buyers immediately look for free shipping. This is why if you offer free shipping, Etsy makes it clear by putting a little free shipping tag under your item. Shipping also improves your SEO because Etsy pushes products which have free shipping. Overall, we have personally found that offering free shipping increases sales.
But what if I simply can’t afford to put free shipping? This is a common problem, but there are ways to help. See below:
• You could put the shipping cost into your product price
• Try to find ways to reduce packaging costs e.g. sourcing cheaper containers or bulk buying packaging.
• Trying to reduce actual cost of shipping. Shipping a large parcel is significantly more expensive than shipping a smaller parcel with less weight. Your product may be on the boundary of weight or dimensions, meaning a slight reduction could move you into the cheaper postage fees.
• Set a minimum order volume to qualify for free shipping. For example, in your banner you could make clear that if you buy 3 of something you qualify for free shipping.
Remember, these aren’t hard and fast rules to follow, but consider them as they may help your store!

This is different from the cost of shipping. By offering first class shipping, it ensures the product gets to the buyer as fast as possible.
Fast shipping has been proven to increase customer satisfaction, improves chance of repeat purchases and makes buyers more likely to leave a positive review!
However, this does increase the cost of shipping so it’s down to you to see if you can factor this in to your pricing strategies. It can also be useful to offer tracked shipping and buyer signatures upon delivery. This helps settle any disputes about whether parcels have arrived or not.
Tip 12: Ask For Reviews

You’ve been wondering about how to sell on Etsy successfully. A key component of that is ‘social proof.’ One example of this is having many positive reviews to show buyers you are reliable.
However, this can be a VERY controversial topic. Some sellers think it’s needy and inappropriate, some sellers think it’s a really useful tool! I personally believe that if you ask for a review politely and at the appropriate time, it should be okay.
So, when should I ask for a review? Personally, I think it’s appropriate to ask for feedback in a personalised note when the buyer receives the item (explained in the next tip). I wouldn’t privately message the seller just after they’ve received the item, or through social media avenues.
However, it’s about gauging what YOU think is appropriate. Would you mind a seller reaching out to you in certain ways? Remember, asking for a review at the wrong time or not politely may even spark negative feedback.
Just remember, always be polite. Explain why reviews really help your store. Don’t just beg for positive feedback – always ask if they enjoyed the experience and if anything could be improved. This will allow you to be better for next time!
Selling On Etsy Tips 13: Nice Packaging With A Personalised Note
This is another ‘How To Sell On Etsy Successfully’ tip that isn’t a requirement, but can go a long way. This seems small, like a final touch or afterthought to some, but this tip is of massive importance.
Sure, the actual product is what the buyer is excited about. But, certain extras go a LONG way to improving customer satisfaction, experience and repeat purchases. Consider these:
• Place your product on colourful crepe paper
• Personalised note detailing your thankful for their purchase and that you hope they like it. You can ask for buyer feedback too – just make sure you ask in a polite manner and don’t just beg for positive feedback. What do I mean? Explain that you’d love to hear their feedback on the product and general experience, whether that’s positive or where you could improve. Explain that you’d be so grateful if they have time to write a review, but that you understand they may be busy. This politeness, I have found, goes a long way.
• Add a ribbon around your wrapped product, or even some confetti.
• Business card with your email, social media handles and contact information. This looks very professional.
You DON’T have to do all of these, it could be overkill and you’d spend more on the actual packaging than your product. But, it’s an interesting thought for getting repeat purchases and good reviews! Let us know if you follow this selling on Etsy tip.
Tip 14: Add A Freebie
(Definitely not a requirement, but can help to sell on Etsy successfully)
Some sellers may not have the profit margins to do this… and that’s okay! If you can offer the buyer a freebie this goes a long way towards them having a positive experience. This is because they are surprised by it and get more than they were expecting. It also makes them much more likely to leave a positive review and make a repeat purchase in future!
What kind of freebie? It could be a range of things:
• A cheaper product from your store if the buyer has bought something more expensive.
• A sticker selection sheet you put in all purchases relating to the product purchased
• A smaller item that you have not listed that is relevant to your store. For example, if you sell candles, you could put in a small wax melt.
These are just a handful of examples, try and think of what you can offer that’s a nice touch and surprise for the buyer.
Tip 15: Fill In Your FAQ's
Of all the selling on Etsy tips, this is a SIMPLE one. When customers land on your page they will often have questions about your products or brand. If they have these questions, the FAQ’s are the first section they will check.
If you haven’t filled in this section, not only does it look unprofessional, but it may even make the potential buyer click away from your store. This is because, and I hate to say it, we’re lazy… that includes buyers.
If they want an answer to their query, they’ll want it fast. They may check the FAQ’s but if this section is not there, they may not be bothered to actually contact the shop owner as they’ll have to wait. Instead, they’ll just buy elsewhere.
But I’m just starting out? I don’t actually have questions people have asked me yet? Still try to think of key ones you think could crop up. At least have the section so in future, when buyers do ask you questions, you can quickly add this to your FAQ’s.
Tip 16: Fill In Your 'About' Page

This about page is very often overlooked. It is an absolutely fantastic opportunity to connect with your audience. This, in most cases, will be the first time the buyer will see who you are and what you’re about.
I always think that Etsy, despite being a selling platform, is different from other selling platforms. The community is often genuinely care who they are buying from. Etsy creates a sense for the buyer that they are supporting a smaller business and will have a better, more personalised experience.
By filling in the about section, it gives the buyer a chance to get to know and trust you. It also looks so much more professional – whoop!
An ideal about section should:
• Introduce yourself and any partners that you work with. Try to maintain a personal approach.
• Discuss the inspiration or backstory behind opening the Etsy store e.g. what made you decide to open one?
• Explain if you stand for a cause. For example, many Etsy stores donate a certain proportion of profits to various organisations. From those that donate to environmental charities to homeless foundations, this is a great way to explain this and you passion for the subject.
• Talk about what inspired you to make the products and designs you have.
• Keep paragraphs short.
• Use a personal tone as this allows the reader to feel connected.
• Include links to your social media accounts or blog.
• Clearly link to your opt-in page for your email list.
Tip 17: Don't Give Up Selling On Etsy (Important!)

For the majority, Etsy takes hard work, dedication and a lot of time. We look at stores and see that they’ve got thousands of sales. We all want that success. But it’s so easy to forget how hard that seller has worked and how long it took before they became that successful. (Depending on your definition of success, of course!)
I used to look at Etsy stores who had over 10,000 sales. I’d look at the number of years they’d been selling and it would say 3 years. I’d start out and think, that’s about 3,333 sales per year and I’m not even close to that. But it doesn’t work like that. Think of the snowball effect. It could take a year of you just being active on the platform getting very few sales and suddenly, it all starts happening.
I’ve seen Etsy sellers who went from zero sales in their first few months, to hundreds very shortly after. Have you seen that image of someone mining for diamonds and they give up just before they reach them? Trust me, just be consistent and keep going!
All it takes is one item to reach bestseller status, sales start pouring in for that item, buyers take interest and, boom, a number of your products are selling.
KEY TIP:
You started an Etsy and your friends and family support you. You get a flood of early sales. This will then dry up (unless your family and friends are made of money) and you may stop getting sales for a while. You just need to push through!
Tip 18: Stand For A Cause

Many Etsy buyers like it when a store stands for a cause. Why not pledge a small percentage of profit from each sale to an organisation of your choice?
A common one is that for every sale you make, you plant a tree. This works really well with stores focussed on environmentally friendly products, for example. If someone is searching for an item that is environmentally friendly and see that you are also donating a small percentage, it just adds additional reasons to purchase your product over someone else’s.
The sole reason you promote something shouldn’t be for the benefit of attracting more customers. But it certainly does help. Write that you support a cause everywhere. In your shop about section, your FAQ’s, on product descriptions and on the banner of your store!

Tip 19: Don't Just Make Generic Products & Hope For The Best!
I hate to say it… and I mean no offence by it… but your products may just be getting lost in a swarm of similar products by equally talented sellers. Look at your products and critically analyse why they are better than the competition.
Don’t get me wrong, you don’t always need a unique selling point (USP), but it certainly helps. I’ve seen hundreds of stores sell loads of generic products, but it really helps newer stores if they are offering something slightly different.
This is where niche comes in. The dreaded niche word. This is such a broad topic that an entire article could be written about it.
Some major take-home points about niche are:
• Create what you know, have faith in your individual style and do that as best YOU can.
• Your biche should cater to a specific group of people. Have your target market in your head when developing new listings. Try to make your products, the style, the photography and theme as amazing and unique as they can be for this specified group.
• Be UNIQUE – take inspiration from others sure, but always put your own spin on it.
• Buyers should be able to tell if an item belongs to your store. How? Because there should be coherence between your listings, photography and style.
• Don’t get boxed in when thinking about a niche – you can always change it up, have fun, try new things and eventually you’ll find something that’s just right.
• Don’t be too specific. If your niche provides products only a very small selection of people may want, you may be limiting your potential. You need to strike a balance. Yes, this is harder said than done!

Selling On Etsy Tips 20: Logo & Banner
Creating a logo and banner is central to creating a brand on Etsy. It makes you recognisable, unique and professional.
Don’t worry if you feel you’re not the creative type. Logos can be simple, look at some of the most well-known brands around, from Nike which is a tick to McDonald’s which is an M.
Want to create your own logo? Canva is an amazing tool you can use to design one. You can add shapes, images, text, colours, you name it. It also has example logos on there to give you some inspiration. This is the tool I personally use to make logos, banners and to edit all the images you see on Pastime To Profit.
Your banner is a fantastic opportunity to create a professional and pretty image at the top of your Etsy store. It doesn’t have to just look pretty though. It can be used to showcase key information about your site. For example:
• it could highlight that 10% of your profits go to a cause.
• Shows some of your bestselling or favourite listings
• Could show discount codes e.g. highlights that if a buyer purchases 3 items they get free shipping.
These are just a handful of ideas the banner can be used for. It’s a great opportunity to get important information over to the buyer.
Tip 21: Reach Out To Influencers

This is a fantastic way to reach new audiences that may potentially have an interest in your products.
Find influencers in your niche. Contact these influencers and politely ask if there is any chance you could have a shoutout for your Etsy store. When messaging them, you may say:
• Explain who you are and talk a little about your Etsy store
• You like their content
• You’ve been following their work for a while.
• You appreciate what they’re doing with their online presence if they have a cause.
It could be all manner of things. Don’t be fake, only contact those you genuinely feel suit your niche and if you think their audience may like your stuff. If you get a reply and someone is not interested, don’t push for it, just thank them for their time and move on.
You could even send certain influencers some of your products in hope they’ll give you a shoutout. If you’re genuine and nice, it is far more likely they’ll mention you and your product in their story rather than not mentioning you. Remember to ask them if this is okay first though!
Also, if you don’t like the idea of reaching out, you don’t have to. You don’t have to do all these selling on Etsy tips, just do what you feel comfortable with!
Tip 22: Link Social Media
Generally speaking, all your social media accounts should be connected to your Etsy store, and vice versa. To do this, go to:
• Shop manager
• On the side menu, click marketing.
• Then click social media.
• Currently, on the top right of your screen click a button that says social accounts.
• Connect your Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and Instagram.
This will display an icon on your Etsy store showing that you have connected your social media handles. This is a fantastic opportunity for buyers, if they like your products, to follow you on other platforms.
Tip 23: Pinterest
If you’re not on Pinterest, you SHOULD be. By creating boards on Pinterest you can promote your products which have direct links to your listings. Pinterest can SIGNIFICANTLY increase your sales.

Also, remember to ‘claim your Etsy store’ on your Pinterest account. To do this, go onto your Pinterest account. Click settings. Click on ‘claim’.
This allows you to ‘get credit for all your content on Pinterest. When you claim your content, your name and profile picture will show up next to any pins that come from your site or external accounts’. This will help you to get recognition for your products and start building a brand.
Then, click back onto settings and go to edit profile. Scroll down and you will see a box for your Website URL. Fill in your Etsy store URL and this will then be showcased as a link on your Pinterest account.

Instagram allows you to put one link in your bio. Make sure you put your Etsy store URL here. You can do this by going onto your account main page, clicking edit profile and filling in the URL.
