How & Where to Grow Your Etsy Email List Quickly
If you’ve been wondering how to grow your Etsy email list, you’re in the right place. Firstly, you have an Etsy email list which is an AMAZING start! It’s one of the single best things you can do for your store. If you’re not totally sold just yet, check out these 9 reasons why having an Etsy email list will change your traffic and sales.
As Etsy currently does not allow you to add the email of buyers straight into your email list when they purchase (unless you have bought a Pattern Etsy site and use the Mailchimp integration), it may seem like quite a difficult task to get customer emails. However, there are a number of ways you can go about getting those subscribers… starting today!
Firstly, before we get into the tips, I personally highly advise you use the email service provider SendInBlue. Most email providers after you hit a certain number of subscribers make you pay a monthly fee so you can feel trapped in this payment system every month.
However, with SendInBlue you can have as many email subscribers as you want for free, and send 300 free emails every day forever. You only start paying if you want to send more emails than this per day. With that said, I advise you to research and pick which email provider seems right for YOU!
As an Etsy seller, alongside growing an email list, I advise you to check out these 29 selling on Etsy tips, and these 23 Etsy SEO tips. They are a sure-fire way to improve your Etsy store.
Without further ado, here are 9 ways on how to grow your Etsy email list:
Make Sure You Advertise Your Email List! But where?
1. Social Media (my personal favourite for how to grow your Etsy email list!)
Social media is an absolutely fantastic place to start promoting an email list. There are multiple ways to use social media as a way to gain email subscribers
Posts
Firstly, you can promote it in general posts or stories. If you design a landing page – I use SendInBlue to do this – you can add a link to your posts which takes people directly to your email sign-up page. You can do this on almost all social medias… whether you post it on your Facebook page, Instagram post or story, to Twitter. Making a post is a great way to get initial interest in your list.
Link In Bio
Another way to use social media to get email subscribers is to paste the link in your bio. Social media like Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest allow you to claim a website/put one link in your bio. This is where many people struggle as they don’t want to remove the link directly to their Etsy shop in exchange for one to an email list landing page. But… you don’t have to exchange them! You can add both using Linktr.ee.
Linktr.ee is an AMAZING tool that I use for everything. It creates a link that you can use that when people click on it, it takes you to another page that has as many links to other places as you want. An example of this is below. This page gives me opportunity to link multiple sites and pages that people can click on, all from one place.
Messaging
There is also nothing stopping you from messaging your followers who like your content on social media (Provided you’re not just being spammy, of course). What do I mean? If you notice you have a follower that is consistently liking your product posts or interacting with your content, why not send them a message saying thank you for the support, if they sign up to your email list they’ll get 10% off their first purchase.
This is just an example, but in my opinion, there is nothing wrong with reaching out to people who are clearly interested in and liking your content.
2. In Your Etsy Listing Photography
You can add a number of photos to each listing to showcase your item at different angles, close-ups, action shots, decorative shots… you name it. Adding this variety of photos for each listing is vital, and I touch upon the importance in these 29 selling on Etsy tips.
However, a really uncommon tactic to also help build your email list is to make one of these photos at the end of the reel an email list promotion. You can add a photo saying something like ‘join our Etsy email list to get 10% off your first order. Visit [link] to get your discount code now.’
This not only shows people you have an email list; it increases the number of sales you get. This is because if someone is on the fence for buying your product and they see they can get 10% off, it may just tip them over the edge!
3. Etsy Listing Description
Similar to the point above, make sure in your listing description you touch upon the fact you have an email list. Mention the benefits of joining the email list, as well possibly offering a 10% off their first order if they join the email list. Just add a link, even if it’s just text form… you never know who may copy and paste it into a browser to get a discount!
4. In A Personalised Thank-You Note
Many sellers send a personalised note to the buyer thanking them for supporting their business. What you can do is leave the link to your email-opt in page at the bottom of the thank-you note. You could again offer a discount; however, they’ve already made a purchase so you’ll have to decide if you think it’s appropriate.
What may come across better in this scenario is to say you’d love to get their insight into future product ideas. Explain that your email list isn’t just about promoting your products, but asking users for products they’d love to see in future. This can, if done appropriately, make the buyer feel involved and make them feel like you’re genuinely invested in their opinions on future listings.
5. Etsy Store Banner (Another personal favourite for how to grow your Etsy email list!)
This is one of the BEST places to promote your email list. Your Etsy banner is right at the top of your Etsy store and is the first thing potential buyers see.
You can write a sentence telling potential buyers where they can sign up to your email list and the benefits of signing up. Shock… you guessed it, give them a discount on their first purchase if they sign-up.
You may be thinking, with all these discounts it’s just eating into my profits. However, if you haven’t read my article on ‘why you need an Etsy email list’, it details how an email list significantly increases the change of someone becoming a repeat buyer. Getting someone onto your list, in most cases, is worth offering the discount!
6. FAQ Section
You could write as one of your FAQ’s ‘Does your store offer a discount or coupons?’. This is where you link people to your email list landing page.
7. Shop Announcements
The announcement section is a great way to offer information to potential buyers. Why not announce that you have an email list that people can sign up to so they don’t miss a thing? You can briefly explain the benefits of someone joining the mailing list.
I really hope you’re getting use and enjoying how to grow your Etsy email list so far!
How To Grow Your Etsy Email List: Get People to Actually Sign Up?
So I’ve banged on about offering a discount to those who sign up. The reason I’ve talked about it so much is simple… it’s the most effective method that will get the most sign ups. However, it isn’t the only option available to get emails.
Below is a list of ideas for how to grow your Etsy email list… and how to actually encourage people to give you their email:
1. Offer a freebie
What you can do, which I am very soon about to try myself, is offer a freebie on someone’s next purchase. This can be a very difficult one to offer for a variety of reasons. Maybe you do not have anything small enough to be a freebie, or your profit margins simply wouldn’t allow it. However, if it is possible, it’s a great way to get people to sign up.
If you don’t have anything that you think is suitable, you could consider thinking of something like a downloadable printable, or some cheap stickers if this is in your niche.
2. Offer some valuable information
This again depends on your niche. If you sell products in a certain area and have expertise in it, why not throw together a quick educational e-book or PDF document? A brilliant example of this is if you offer something like crochet or knitting patterns. If someone signs up to your list give them a free, downloadable pattern and information.
3. Offer prizes for raffle draws and competitions
People love raffles. Why not get people to join your email list with the temptation of quarterly raffles that they are automatically entered into? It encourages people to sign up because they have a chance of getting one of your products for free! You’ll definitely end up making more money from growing your email list than giving away the occasional raffle win!
4. Offer Special Specific Discounts
So I’ve talked about offering the classic 10% off, for example. However, you can offer various types of discounts, such as buy one get one free, buy a certain number of products for x amount etc. If you don’t offer free shipping, you can also offer a discount code that gives free standard shipping to those who sign up to your list.
5. Make Clear What Signing Up to Your Email List Actually Means
This one is really important. Some people are apprehensive about offering their email because they don’t know what you’ll be emailing them. People don’t like spam. By adding a little bit of background on what a buyer can expect when they offer their email, it makes it far more likely that they will sign up. So, what sort of things can you say?
You need to explain that your email list is not just going to be weekly or monthly promotions of your store saying to buy your items… that’s just spammy. Instead, you may want to add when people will receive emails like once a month, before sales, before new product launches etc.
You could explain that people may get the occasional piece of information about your store, like hitting goals, celebrations or other news you have. As mentioned in my article ‘why you need an Etsy email list’ I explained how an email list can help you to gauge interest in new, potential products. You could talk about how you may send out questionnaires or quizzes to see which new products people may be interested in. People love quizzes – these types of emails are also much more engaging than just a layer of text!
The more personable you are, the better engagement and trust you will get.
How to Grow Your Email List: Email Provider
I’m going to honest… I am going to write about how amazing I think the email provider SendInBlue is. But I really want you to also research which one is best for YOU. Each of us is different and when it comes to email providers, I really think it’s important to pick one you think suits your needs. However, what we know for definite is that we need a good email service provider when deciding how to grow your email list.
For me, that email provider is SendInBlue. I briefly mentioned it in the introduction of this article, as well as my article ‘how I grew my email list to 125 subscribers my first week blogging’. I love SendInBlue because you don’t have to pay once you hit a certain number of subscribers, unlike other email service providers.
Instead, you will always have 300 free emails per day forever, and if you want to send more, you can decide in varying increments how many you want to be able to send for various costs.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of other email service providers you may want to check out:
• Mailchimp
• ConvertKit
• Constant Contact
• Get Response
